Based in Vancouver, Katherine Xilinas is an Associate Partner with EY Law LLP and a member of the Tax Law Services group. Katherine has been practicing in the areas of indirect tax and tax litigation since 2000, having joined EY Law LLP from a large national law firm in 2014. She advises and represents clients on sales, use and commodity tax planning and compliance matters including the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) and Provincial Sales Tax (PST), as well as federal excise taxes and customs matters including origin, value for duty, tariff classification, export and import controls and duty relief.
Katherine has worked in both Vancouver and Toronto, where she has represented clients before the Canadian taxing authorities in the context of income tax, GST/HST, PST and customs voluntary disclosures, audits, objections and adjudications. She has also represented clients in tax appeals, judicial review applications and tax-driven rectification applications at various levels of court, including the B.C. and Ontario superior courts, the Tax Court of Canada, the Canadian International Trade Tribunal and the Federal Courts of Canada.
Katherine is a frequent speaker and writer, and a co-author of Carswell’s Canadian Customs Law.
